HISTORY

William Penn founded Philadelphia, the "City of Brotherly Love", in 1682. William Penn's chief surveyor, Captain Thomas Holmes, designed grid pattern for the city that included wide streets and five public squares to fulfill William Penn's vision of a city where people would always have green areas to meet and relax. After almost 300 years these green parks are still present in modern day Philadelphia and are still an area where people can meet and relax. Philadelphia grew rapidly in the 18th century until it was the second largest English-speaking City in the world.

Philadelphia is often regarded as the birthplace of the United States because of the events that took place in Philadelphia in the 18th century. It is here that the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 declaring our independence from England. And it is also here where more that a decade later, in 1787, delegates developed the Constitution of the United States. Many of the sites that played a significant roles in the history of our country such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, City tavern, Congress Hall, Franklin Court, Betsy Ross’ House, Christ’s Church are popular tourist attractions today.
